Erudition

After finishing the last sentence of Saul Bellow's Pulitzer Prize winning book, Humboldt's Gift, I could not but contain my new found admiration for the late Nobel Prize winning author. His prose floats on an almost metaphysical realm, while some detractors called it nothing more than an attempt at expressing his erudition and philosophical prowess. Ah yes, I completely agree. But that doesn't mean his writing is all the worse.

It is brilliant precisely because of that, and you can't help but be absorbed by his characters conversations with others or themselves. Witty, sharp and insightful. I must say, I want to write like him.
